Our Focus for the 2025-2026 school year

For the 2025/2026 school year, our school's learning focus is:

Finding voice in writing - to select and use appropriate feature, forms and genres of writing according to audience, purpose and message.

For the past few years we have been exploring the following question:

How can we help students strengthen their sense of self and their place in the world using the Personal & Social Core Competency as our guide? There was particular focus on the following facets of the Positive Personal and Cultural Identity sub-competency:

  • Understanding relationships and cultural contexts
  • Recognizing personal values and choices
  • Identifying personal strengths and ability

As a continuation in our journey to identify personal strengths and ability, we recognize that not all students see themselves as belonging in the literacy setting - they do not see themselves as writers. Students need support to find voice in writing - to select and use appropriate feature, forms and genres of writing according to audience, purpose and message.

The following actions will support us as we explore belonging in literacy:

1. Assessing student writing samples

2.  School wide planning to target the following:

Supporting students to select and use appropriate features, forms and genres of writing according to audience, purpose and message.

3.  Increasing student engagement with the writing process through targeted school wide activities

4. Making the school community aware of our focus through regular examples of the school story in action

The intention of these actions is to make the following difference(s) for learners:

To help students find their voice in writing.

We will know that our work with learners is making a difference when students are able to articulate what they are learning and demonstrate growth through assessment and self assessment of writing.
