What We Learned From Our Students and Staff

Gathering Information

At the end of the 2022-2023 school year, we held focus groups with our intermediate students to get a better understanding of how they were feeling at school - ultimately whether they felt a sense of safety and belonging. This information was collected so that we could work towards supportive action. We wanted to know what students valued as members of the school community and to understand the impact of our learning journey on the school community. We also collected information from our teachers using a survey.

Student Focus Groups

We learned the following:

  • Students value inclusive spaces like Rainbow Club, Breakfast Club, Games Club, Green Team, Knitting/Crochet Club
  • Older students needed a safer place, so we created a Rainbow Club Focus Group for them
  • Student relations to staff positively increased over time with different inclusive spaces created
  • The majority of students shared as having at least two adults at school they feel comfortable talking to
  • Some students shared as not having at least two adults at school they feel comfortable talking to

Staff Questionnaires

We learned the following:

  • Most staff are interested in providing service to the school to create a safe space?
  • Staff value and find importance in safety and belonging
  • Staff experience safety and belonging though events run for taff, snack club, working together to support students.
  • Most teachers attended at least one of the following activities sponsored by teachers at least one time: Breakfast Club, Rainbow Club, Games Club, Knitting/Crochet Club, Organized sports (basketball, volleyball), Green Team
  • Teachers value the time at staff meetings and on Professional Development Days to look or at and think about the School Story and most read the Weekly School Story in Action that goes home to families
