Orange Shirt Day

Orange Shirt Day

"...strengths within our community..."

The Manoah Steves Staff has demonstrated a strong commiment to Aboriginal Perspectives and Knowledge along with the First Peoples Principles of Learning. Several professional development days have been dedicated to learning how to infuse the new curriculum with these perspectives, knowledges and principles. We put these learnings into actions on September 27, 2018 with our recognition and observance of Orange Shirt Day. With the theme, "Every Child Matters," students participated in an event, facilitated by aboriginal educator and teacher consultant, Ms. Lynn Wainwright, where they experienced a traditional drum story, a short film, and Ms. Wainwright's personal story of how the residential school system has impacted her and her family. Teachers helped students prepare for the day using age-appropriate books about residential schools. Every student did follow-up activities to help them synthesize their learning about the residential school system and to think of actions ensuring our school is one where every child matters.

Moving into the 2018-2019 FESL cycle, the Steves staff remains committed to learning and teaching with Aboriginal Perspectives and Knowledge along with the First Peoples Principles of Learning and to work with all of our students arounds ideas and actions of reconcilliation.
