School Story Survey: Going Deeper

Gathering Information: 

 

Our goal is to gather information from students about their sense of belonging, safety and what they value as members of the school community. We will use this information to continue to give voice to students, with the focus of identifying those who may be at the margins, as we continue to look at the impact of our learning journey and the changes that have been witnessed within the community. 

 

We learned the following: 

  • - Students value inclusive spaces like Rainbow Club, Breakfast Club, Games Club, Green Team, Knitting/Crochet Club 

  • - Older students needed a safer place, so we created a Rainbow Club Focus Group for them 

  • - Student relations to staff positively increased over time with different inclusive spaces created 

  • - Majority of students shared as having at least two adults at school they feel comfortable talking to 

  • - Some students shared as not having at least two adults at school they feel comfortable talking to 

 

Our goal is to gather information from all students and staff to inform our professional development around the information students shared with us, as well as to inform our work around the School Story. This information informs the kinds of resources we choose to purchase with intention (e.g. student and teacher literature), the lens we use to guide our teaching practices and activities and the school-wide activities that allow us to embody and live our School Story. 

 

Questions that we used to gather information from students and staff: 

  • - Are you interested in providing service to the school to create a safe space? 

  • - What do you value at school? (example ONLY: safety, belonging, being myself...etc.) 

  • - What helps you experience these values? (example ONLY: Rainbow Club, Basketball, Learning about...) 

  • - What would you like to see as changed? 

  • - Did you attend one of the following activities at least one time?: Breakfast Club, Rainbow Club, Games Club, Knitting/Crochet Club, Organized sports (basketball, volleyball), Green Team? 

  • - What makes you look or not look at the weekly School Story in Action?
